Braiding Science, Community, and Policy

“If you’re someone who values a safe and healthy planet where people, ecosystems, plants, and polar bears can all thrive, then I have good news for you,” writes SEARCH Research & Program Management Fellow, Alex Shahbazi. “The message from the earth science community is clear. They have the solutions. They can say what can be done. But only we, as members of society and voters in democracies, can say what should be done. We have the power. Let’s use it.” In a recent article published by Polar Bears International, Alex reflects on his experience attending the American Geophysical Union’s 2023 annual meeting with SEARCH (where we hosted both a town hall and poster session). His article outlines three needs from the earth science community that rose to the surface: 1) to further the practice of weaving community needs with research and science, 2) to better connect science with policy, and 3) to rapidly accelerate actions addressing climate change.
